I have tried all the hints y'all recommended but could not fix the problem.

I will try this evening Davids test with the inverse characters.

If the char settings are in the MegaII then I can not fix it.
However being a semiconductor engineer myself I have to notice that the 
effect is really strange.

I assume the MegaII has no programmable ROM, so the ROM is "hard wired" 
by the layout mask and should not show any problems.
Unfortunately I do not know a lot about this iigs as I have purchased it 
recently. May this is a walking wounded for all of his life and all 
diagnostics could not catch this flaw because it is just visual.
The fake "#" is recognized as $E1, so no problem.

$E1 is not so far away from $A3 as you have just to toggle one bit in 
the lower an upper byte to get it done.

Strange is that this happens only to this character.
I do not know the internals enough to do more speculation, so I accept 
it as it is.... a curiosity.

Two wild guesses:	
1) Bad by birth, so was a problem not found by final test.
2) Trapped charges in the gate oxide of the ROM cell or simply a 
lifetime problem

I will know if 2) has happened if more characters will go bad in the future.
