The really impressive thing is when you look at just how few chips in
the Apple II were added to created the hires mode.
Of course, with a large engineering budget and a custom display, you
could do a lot better, even in 1977, but adding just a couple of
dollars worth of off-the-shelf components to a general purpose design
to achieve what the Apple II graphics achieved is an absolute work of
art, and a masterpiece of engineering.
Everyone says that Disk ][ was Woz's best feat, but to me, it's hard to
seperate it from the sheer elegance of that video generator. It's the
kind of thing that when learning digital electronics, you look at it
and go, "Wow".
