As far as I understand, GIF *only* supports LZW compression.

I must have mis-remembered.  ISTR dealing with files in a very simple
uncompressed pallette-encoded pixel array about 10 years back...

I had it "filed" under GIF, but it must have been "misfiled".  ;-)
