Well, I'm using Merlin assembler (V2.57) and EPZ is not accepted as a valid
directive.
Can I just replace it with EQU?

Merlin automatically uses zero page addressing if possible (the manual
says "appropriate").

You can force non-zero page addressing, however, by adding another
character (like an "N") to the opcode.

Example:

Addr EQU $10

LDA Addr results in $A0 $10

whereas

      LDAN Addr results in $AD $10 $00

Restrictions:
You can't add a "D" to the opcode with Merlin 8 or an "L" with Merlin
16.

I generally append "a" for "absolute".
