Not necessarily.  Only the boot sector must be readable by the boot ROM,
and it can contain code that reads a quite different format for every
other part of the disk, even track 0.

You have to appreciate how totally *soft* the Disk ][ is!

Or should I break out the wildcard-II card I found in a pile of
hardware?  (anyone have the accompanying software for that card?)

The WildCard will only capture the memory image of a single-load
game, not the disk image.
