Or more to the point, the PC Transporter allowed us to run DOS
software, if we so chose.
And then, in the 90's Apple produced a machine that was equipped with
486 processor on a card, the 6100/DOS. A friend of mine had one of
these... unfortunately the first generation PPC's where disappointing,
as the majority of code was still 68k at the time, and the modest 60Mhz
clock meant they were hardly any faster, and in many cases considerably
worse than the previous 040 boxen

It's sure going to be interesting times ahead... One wonders though,
that if Apple eat too much market share away from the big OEM PC
manufacturers (Who doesn't want to replace their Dell laptop with a
Macbook) how long it will be until they complain to the legal system
that Apple 'play fair' and allow other vendors to run their operating
system
