Re: Is it possible to build a modern Apple][?

Yes, as a matter of fact you could make on the size of a rist watch and
it would be over 5,000 X faster then the orginal Apple ][

5GHz is a little high for the 6502 pipeline, which is tightly coupled
to memory. I'd believe 100-200MHz with SRAM some finesse in design.

Of course, if you want to completely undo the instruction timings and
main memory accesses, then all bets are off.

Designs that are tightly coupled to memory are not prime candidates
for super-speed implementation. Modern processor architectures try
to touch memory as little as possible by using several levels of
caching.
