Unless you're talking about apple installing volume knobs on the side of an apple //e, you've posted to the wrong forum. Although that doesn't sound like a bad idea -- anyone ever mod their //e case with a headphone jack and volume knob? Any recommendations for doing so?
It's not as simple as you'd like, since the "neutral" side of the speaker is at +5v and the "signal" side is being pulled down by a Darlington transistor. So the big problem is that the speaker is not ground-referenced. I modified my machines with a small 1:1 audio transformer in place of the speaker and a 200 Ohm pot across the secondary to control the volume. I used a mini-phone socket across the speaker for a headphone jack. -michael Music synthesis for 8-bit Apple II's!
