I never did a volume knob, but I did put just a simple toggle switch on
mine to mute it.
I was king of the toggle switches on my block. Both of my 5.25" drives
had write-enable switches so I didn't have to notch disks, and one of
them had a write-protect switch that would prevent writing even if the
disk was notched.
