A C1 or any fpga ftm, does not 'emulate' it more acccurately 'clones'
 or 'reimplements' HW :-p ;-)

I beg to differ.

The definition of 'emulation':

"3. Computer Science. To imitate the function of (another system), as by modifications to hardware or software that allow the imitating system to accept the same data, execute the same programs, and achieve the same results as the imitated system."

The C1 (for example) accepts the same data (ROM, software) and executes the same programs (the fore-mentioned ROM, software) and achieves the same results (video output, amongst others).

When 'cloning' hardware you're reproducing the same circuit at the gate level. To some extent, most FPGA implementations do actually attempt to do this. But only up to a point - there's PS/2 input, VGA output, Compact Flash adapters etc which certainly aren't part of the original design. And I know that *my* implementations are certainly 'emulations' rather than 'clones' because I don't attempt to reproduce the same circuit - but it achieves the same result!
