Yes but the push to kill off the Apple II really started as far back as
1979 when Apple first turned it's focus away from the Apple II and on
the the Apple /// and Lisa projects.  That was directly the doing of
Steve Jobs and by September 1985 the rot had fully set in.  I think
that Apple IIgs only happened because at the time it came out there
were a lot of doubts within Apple as to the success of the Macintosh
line.  It was the success of the expandable/color Macintosh II line
released 3 months after the introduction of the IIgs (January 1987)
that pretty much cast the final fate of the Apple II IMHO.
