Most pentium pc's can run knoppix (debian linux on a bootable CD) I don't know if it can do HFS though. Running knoppix will not disturb your windows... If your pc can't boot a CD there are floppy images that would boot into the CD. It autodetects most pc hardware (I had to tell it about an aztec soundchip though, but the driver was included).
It reads/writes NTFS too so it is an easy way to bypass NT/2K/XP passwords. Knut
