How the Wildcard (may have been a Wildcard II) worked:

Boot copy protected disk, wait until it's loaded.

Press Button on Wildcard

Wildcard menu comes up, lets you save the memory contents to a disk.

Boot that disk and it comes up and asks you to press the Wildcard button.

Press the button and the program continues.

The software that came with it allowed you to create a bootable disk 
that didn't require the Wildcard.

But it's been a long time and I only did one game with it...
