If all you are looking for is an easy way to plug "something" into an
Apple II, then pull it out and plug this "something" into a PC or Mac,
for the purpose of transferring files, then such a device already
exists:

You want the CFFA (Compact Flash card for Apple II) card. It allows you
to use industry standard compact flash storage cards on an Apple II,
where it looks like a hard drive. Copy your files to it, then move the
card to your PC or Mac with a compact flash reader, and copy the files.

The CFFA is having another (and maybe its last?) manufacturing run
RIGHT NOW, and then are just under $100. It works on everything from a
][+ to a GS.

True, this is no USB thumb drive, but I think it is as close as you're
going to get to what you're after. I'm getting two myself...
