Yes!

Just so you know, I have ordered about every different (mac) mechanism 
there is and they ALL work as replacement 800k drives and as A2 Super 
drives, regardless of what Shreve was telling me.

At one point Shreve was trying to be helpful and telling me that the $5 
mechanisms I was attempting to purchase would not work on my A2 with 
Superdrive controller so they would not sell it to me.  (Love their 
service.)  Well they ultimately disavowed support or return guarantee to 
sell me the mechanisms and they work perfectly. I have since converted 
all my regular 3.5 drives to the superdrive mechanism to avoid 
confusion.  (I left the Unidisks alone.)

Just make sure it is a Mac 1.44/800k mechanism and not a PC 1.44 only 
mechanism.
