    Yes, I don't expect super stable definition out of such a box, it was
just to try some of my old games in color - I had never seen them. The box
works fine in other cases (VCR, TV etc). Even with the "mono" settings and
white text I get no "slithering" - the characters are nice and stable
though.

    Yeah, and if the signal is "dirty" with other components as suggested,
weird things do happen: my box tells me I have a SECAM signal! There must be
some signal interference as the SECAM subcarrier is 4.25/4.40MHz while PAL
is (as the XTAL read onm y PAL IIe) 4.43...
