For reasons that probably should remain a mystery, I'm trying to "cross-over" the cassette I/O ports on a pair of IIes... the immediate problem is that the output is at line level and the input expects a much higher level, so I need to amplify the signal. Is it possible to make a very small amplifier to achieve this?
The "standard" way to do this was to plug into an ordinary cassette recorder, then press record. This (usually) provides the recorded signal at line level at the speaker output. If you don't have a cassette recorder with mic input and spkr output available, a small audio amplifier with a gain of 10x-100x should work fine. These are normally sold as "microphone preamps". A mixer with microphone input should do the job as well. Of course, an amplifier could be constructed for this purpose if you intend to use it a lot...it could even run on one of the Apples' +5v supply (with some filtering). -michael Music synthesis for 8-bit Apple II's!
