You and Warren should both be aware that sockets, while handy
when a chip *does* fail, are a much bigger source of problems than
the chips themselves. This is why *only* components that have a
high probability of replacement are usually socketed (like EPROMs).
From working with a few arcade boards, I totally agree.
Sockets, "edge connectors" (i.e. slots in an Apple II) and ribbon
cable connectors cause many problems.
I wish I had the soldering skills of IceMan.
My solution (for a 74* chip) is to clip it off and desolder each pin.
