Just to clarify, the IIgs IS a IIe unless you boot into GSOS (or ProDOS-16).
All the other posts tell you how to drop the IIgs out of accelerated mode so it behaves at the speed of a IIe. Which just happens to be critical if you want to play games.
Again, OpenApple-Control-Esc takes you to the control panel where you can set things such as the speed and whether or not the slots are set for the built-in hardware or whether the slots are in available.
From GSOS you can usually get to a GUI version of the control panel under the Apple Menu in the upper left corner of the screen.
