The IIgs does have input buffers for the serial ports that default to
2 KB in size.  There is a way to increase this buffer size all the way
up to 64 KB but I can't remember how to do it at present.  I know
Spectrum has a menu option for setting the size of the buffer if you
are using that as your communications program.

If you could increase the buffer size it might help you with character
loss until you can get a proper hardware handshaking cable made.
