Yes, there were a couple of beefier power supplies for just the reasons 
you have mentioned above.  The only ones I can think of were the Vulcan 
which added a hard drive and the AE replacement that was rated for much 
higher current availability and had a fan.

You may only need to ensure your current power supply gets sufficient 
cooling.

Personally I have tried a couple of approaches.  Both met my requirement 
to not visibly alter the IIgs.

On the first modification, I have added a standard 3" fan to an existing 
IIgs power supply and hacked the lid a bit to make it fit.  The extra 
cooling allows the IIgs power supply to not overheat and does nothing to 
the exterior.  I did remove the under part of the IIgs case fins to 
allow better air flow though, it's ugly on the inside.

My second attempt was to hack down a IIgs power supply case and mounted 
a modified ATX power supply to the plate.  This gave me the same exhaust 
capabilities for heat control.  Modifications tot he ATX power supply 
include hard wire the power line through a switch to turn it on and off 
at the back like a real IIgs, jumper the ATX power switch wire to 
ground, and of course I soldered the old IIgs power supply plug to the 
power supply board so I could plug it in to the main board.
