The only II I ever hacked was my first Apple II, a II+ (volume control, 
dual joystick ports, misc experiments) definitely had a speaker LED. 
Although this person mentioned it being a II, I also recall reading that 
the II and II+ differences were minor except for the Applesoft Rom.

Maybe I am exposing the extent of my memory failing, it has been a LONG 
time since having to troubleshoot a II.  And of course it is semantics 
now as I no longer have a II+ to go look at.  (Convenient for me, too.)
