I think I'm looing for the same game too - I thought it was "Dungeon Quest" or something like that... your little ascii guy runs around shooting arrows at the monsters.. zoit! zoit!
That sounds like the right game. And when there was a ranged attack, the game would draw an ASCII line between you and the target monster to illustrate the attack.
I remember that your first ranged weapon was a crossbow because the game referred to bolts instead of arrows. That confused me at first.
This game was also my first exposure to monsters like afreets and wraiths.
