DOS may do strange things to the filenames, making them awkward to deal
with if you use DOS-based emulators.  Of course, the same applies to
anything other than 8+3 names.  AFAIK, Win95 and later handled filenames
with multiple dots without problems.

I wouldn't worry about the dots.

I'm a little more annoyed about ".rar" files appearing in the archive,
since that's harder to deal with than .gz or .zip.  .gz can be opened
directly by some emulators, and .zip is supported directly by WinXP,
but .rar requires an application.
