I have a collection (about 120 disks) of cracked Apple II games that I
was planning to convert to .dsk and contribute to Asimov or other
sites. Unfortunately, about half this collection has vanished from
where it was originally stored (my folks' place). So, now I'm in the
process of trying to reacquire these games - not the original versions,
which I find can often be located on eBay, but the cracked versions,
for which I can only find emulator images or nothing at all. If there
are reputable websites out there selling those games, I suck at finding
them. (I did find one a long time ago, bouncepass.com, to which I sent
a $10 money order and from which received nothing in return.)
One of these games is Rescue on Fractalus! by Epyx. I've found two
images of this game online; one cracked by "Blade" sometime in the late
'80s, and one cracked by "The Micron and the Half-Tracker" much
earlier. The second one is the one I used to have, except that the
emulator image has apparently been modified so that some of the cracker
credits have been removed and replaced with "From the library of Father
Retsam." I can't remember what was in the place of that sentence, but
it was quite a bit more. For a collector like myself, this simply
won't do.
So, I basically have a few questions. I've already consulted the csa2
FAQ, which indicates that the USENET groups are a good place to find
folks willing to sell copies of games. My first question then is, is
there anyone here (or in csa2 marketplace which seems to see much less
traffic) with a collection of cracked titles from which they would be
willing to make copies and sell? If you're here and reading this,
would you happen to have the version of Rescue on Fractalus! as I've
described? If this isn't a good place to look after all, would there
be any good websites for this that I've overlooked? I know the whole
thing's a bit dodgy since I'm specifically looking for cracked copies
instead of legitimate ones. KC appears to have an annual Apple II /
Mac gathering but it seems I missed this year's.
