Not sure if this opens the door to an 8-bit Apple II and Atari 800
version of HLA Adventure, but...
HLA ADVENTURE for the Commodore 64
Ported from the .Z5 version by Paul Panks and Roger Pepitone
It took me awhile to figure out how to do this, but I think the game
now works on the Commodore 64/128!
Run the first disk side FIRST, then it will prompt the user to insert
the second disk. Do so and follow the game prompt. Type 'help' at the
command prompt for a list of game commands.
This was ported directly from the .Z5 version of the Windows and Linux
versions of HLA Adventure. It doesn't quite display elegantly in
40-column mode, but it doesn't look bad, either.
The game data file is very large -- in fact, if you're running this in
VICE, be sure that TRUE DRIVE EMULATION is turned OFF after you load
the game (make sure it is turned ON while the game loads the first two
disk sides, then turn it OFF when game play begins...otherwise gameplay
is unbearably slow).
As for how to optimize this game so it plays faster...well...I'm not
entirely sure yet. You might try compiling it somehow and making it run
faster that way, because it is intepreted from the game data file on
both sides of HLAADV.D64 and HLAADV2.D64.
If playing on a REAL Commodore 64 computer, have lots of patience while
the game determines what command you entered and then wait as it
displays the current room. Sometimes it took up to 45 seconds for this
to happen for command (an almost unbearable wait). But hey...a game
that shouldn't fit into a Commodore 64 now does, so I guess there's
some sacrifices to be made. :) Speed being one of them.
