Perhaps this would have been possible with really ancient modems.  Modern
modems however, with bit rates of 9600 bps and above, output a signal which
is audibly almost indistinguishable from white noise....


I did once hear a symphony based on the righ tones of cellular phones
though, where the phones of the audience were used.  Each phone had
been given a specific set of ring tones, and the concert hall had a set of
special ceullular phone base stations installed.  All of these base stations
were connected to a computer.  During the concert the computer controlled
each cellular phone: when it would ring and what ring signal it would
use.  The audience was of course supposed to let their phones just ring
and not try to answer the "calls"....

What did it sound like?  Well, quite different -- and after a few minutes
also quite boring.
