I hear ya. I've spent more on my II's in the last couple of years than the whole period from my 1st Apple 2c purchase in March of 84, excluding the 2c itself. Granted the 2c was limited in what you could buy as an add-on but even getting software was tough sometimes.
Of course, I live in the boonies so Apple II stuff was often hard to find anyhow. The Public Library and Nibble magazines/books sure did help to pass the time. My wife, son and I had more fun typing in those programs. Wouldn't have missed that for anything.
Never could afford to BBS back then, everywhere I called was long distance. It's too bad the II's couldn't have gotten the exposure that the PC's enjoy today. Life might have been a whole lot better.
