For word, that would be once.

Word 5, which runs on my SE run System 6, will still run on 10.3 via
the Classic environment (although the installer crashes, so you need to
copy the already-installed application from another box.)

Of course, there have been plenty of updates since then, but you didn't
_have_ to upgrade to them.

Since the Intel boxes will (most likely) be the first Macs to be
incompatible with 68K-based Mac software, this will be the first
hardware change that will force an upgrade of Word.  (Unless, of
course, you want to install vMac and run it through that.)
