Every 10 or 11 years.  Actually amazingly infrequent in this day of 
rapid chip technology change.  Here are the dates:


1984-1995  Original 680x0 Macs
1994-2006  PowerPC's
2005-?     Intel M Series

Note, Mac historians think that Apple is a year late in changing chip 
architecture.
