No real architecture competition on the desktop has existed for a
decade.  The Mac and PowerPC never worried Intel at all.

And regardless of addressing extensions, the x86 architecture is still
the x86 architecture.  It isn't pretty, but it is "good enough" I guess.

Perhaps we will someday see the rastiness of the x86 architecture, coupled with its sufficient performance, as a primary reason for
programmers abandoning assembly language.  ;-)
