If you get a IIe, you'll want the Apple Composite Monitor. It has a B/W - Color switch on it that will make text applications MUCH more readable without having to get an RGB setup. (RGB cards for the //e are hard to come by)
Actually, the monochrome/color switching that is most important is _internal_ and completely automatic. When you are in text (monochrome) mode, this monitor--uniquely--increases its video bandwidth significantly to allow clean 80-column text display. There is also an _external_ switch that allows you to force monochrome mode even witn graphics (color) display modes. -michael 8-voice music synthesizer using NadaNet networking!
