A nice starting point would be the SYM-1 support for the 1541 drive, in 6502
assembler source in
http://www.6502.org/users/dallas/SYM/SYMDOS2/symdos2.htm
Using the joystick interface might be enough to interface.
For 1541 PC support: Star Commander, cbm4win etc. Special cables like the XE1541
are easy to make.
