I recently had a resurgence of interest in both Apple II games and the
hackers/crackers that unlocked and distributed them in the days of
yore. I'm sure most people here are familiar with the splendid little
2D action-adventure game H.E.R.O.
At one time, I had it on a disk with some other games - and with a hack
for extra lives. As I recall, the relevant portion of the disk catalog
resembled this:
B 124 H.E.R.O.
A 010 HERO CHEAT U/L BY RASSELON
The numbers are wrong I'm sure, but no matter. Anyway, the second
program, when run, would present you with a prompt in which you were to
choose the number of lives (0-255). You entered the number, and then
the game itself launched.
I've since lost the original disk, and I'm unable to find even a disk
image of H.E.R.O. let alone the hack. So, I ask the Apple II community
at large for advice - about this as well as about where I might
generally be able to obtain cracked versions of Apple II games. Anyone
can buy a legit copy on eBay, but the cracked ones have all sorts of
fun goodies including "unofficial" documentation and those amusing
splash screens with all the cracker credits.
