Re: Battery Backed RAM Card

Yes, "leaving it on" is the effect I was looking
for, without leaving it turned on. The DRAM
needs to be refreshed often to retain it's
contents. I understand the video generator
does this. So to acheive the desired effect,
you would either have to leave large part
of the motherboard powered, or mimic
the refresh signal that is provided by the
video gen.
Would there be problems
when turning back on, and having the
video gen. synch with the "refresh while
power off" circuitry? Or could the
video gen just take over?
Would be a cool addition to the Apple II.
PC's and Mac's dont do it.
what if...
"my apple II doesn't boot. It just turns on."
I understood what you wanted, but note that it is much
more complex than just attaching a battery, and much
less reliable that rebooting in seconds from a CFFA or
hard disk. The system will be up before the monitor
warms up!
I realize that you want to "hold" the entire state of
the machine, but I wasn't kidding when I suggested that
the right way to do that is to leave it powered. ;-)
Only low-power SRAM-based systems are suitable for
continuous _battery_ backup, where it is easy to make
the backup power redundant for reliability.
