To make it work properly, Open 'My Computer'

Select Tools then Folder Options, then click the View tab.

Uncheck the 'Hide file extensions of known file types'

This will allow you to rename any files including the extensions in 
Windows XP.

(Of course this will not help if the file was corrupted during transfer.)
