Re: Owner of 2 Localtalk adapters... now what?

I'm sure I've posted detailed instructions about this before - the FAQ
might have picked them up at some point?

On a ROM 3, you set slot 1 (or 2) to AppleTalk, matching the port to
which you have the LocalTalk network connected.

You can ALSO set slot 7 to AppleTalk if you need to run old software
which assumed that the IIgs AppleTalk firmware was located in slot 7 (as
it was in the original ROM 0 and ROM 1).

Assuming you have the full set of System 6.0.1 disks, and your IIgs only
has 3.5" floppy drives, you can get AppleTalk access working by using
the System 6.0.1 installer to create a normal System 6.0.1 boot disk,
then using custom install to modify that disk to add "Network:
AppleShare (on 800K disk)" (or something like that - I haven't looked at
the IIgs Installer for about ten years).

One big catch: it will have to delete the Finder from the system disk in
the process (there isn't enough space for a full IIgs system plus
AppleShare client in 800K). In principle you can launch Finder as an
application from another volume (e.g. the file server, a second 3.5"
drive, etc.)

If you have access to larger drives (hard drive, 1.44MB SuperDrive,
etc.) it is somewhat easier, as you can fit Finder on the system disk.

You should be able to access the Mac as a file server simply by turning
on its File Sharing and setting AppleTalk to use the printer port.

You can't boot the IIgs over the network unless you have an older Mac
which is running AppleShare 3.0 (on System 7).
