Apple made an Enhancement kit to upgrade an unenhanced IIe to EnhancedIIe by replacing 4 chips (CPU [65C02], Video ROM [MouseText], and newMonitor/Applesoft ROMs)It enables it to run newer apple ii software likeproterm
