That's completely normal. 

To get to 80-column mode, you have to do a PR#3 and/or IN#3 command from 
BASIC (or the equivalent in the monitor - "3<CTRL-P><return>" if I'm 
remembering correctly) once the boot finishes.

Some disks/apps (Appleworks and Apple Pascal are two that leap to mind) 
will take care of that automatically for you, but if you're just booting 
into BASIC, you're going to find yourself in the land of 40 columns 
every time.
