Re: Please Explain Graphics

Hi people,
First of all, I'd like to thank those who offered assistence when I had
problems with my monitor. It seems it's fubar and my wife is going to
turn it into a designer fish tank (should be pretty cool with the Apple
logo and all).
Sorry to hear that...
Anyway, I recently acquired an Apple IIE (to go with my II+) and I've
been playing with it a little. As I have no monitor (well, until it's
fish tankified I do, but, as you'll recall, everything on it is
severely shifted to the left) I've plugged into a small TV that I own.
That's peachy except...

Hires graphics (HGR and HGR2) doesn't allow full width of screen. I
heard that the screen with should be 280 (0 to 279) but when I try to
draw a line around the screen it cuts out at 270 (nothing higher will
show - almost like it's off the side of the screen).
I presume that the TV fills the screen when you're watching TV...
So, do you mean that pixels beyond x=270 are really off-screen,
that is, behind the bezel?
If so, then the width is adjusted far too wide. The Apple II
intentionally uses only the middle 2/3 of the raster, just to
avoid problems of overscan on TV displays.
So what's the deal here? I've loaded some hires games and they seem to
only use 0 to 270(ish) because all of their graphics show. But the
computer doesn't spit the dummy unless I try to draw at pixel 280 and
beyond.
Is this by design? Is there a problem using a TV (not enough
resolution)? Are people lying to me and that hires max width is
actually only 271? Am I going insane (probably, but don't answer that
one).
No, x = 0..279 should fill exactly the same width as a full-
width (40- or 80-columns) text display. Try just holding
down a key and letting it auto-repeat until it wraps to the
next line--the width of that line is the width of the Apple
display, and it should all be visible on your screen.
All help appreciated.

PS: I love being in this group - it makes me snug knowing that I'm not
the only geek who likes vintage technology and you all are very
understanding and helpful. It's appreciated.
Right on!
