Because when the concept occurred to me, it was with Commodore
64's or the like in mind, which really didn't make for easy switching.
Once you get a certain level, the fact that you can do things like
having multiple computers means less and less. Even four years ago,
when a Mac LC was my main computer, having some secondary computers might
have helped, and certainly there was an appeal in that some smaller
computers were better at things. I never did much with it, but I
did have my Radio Shack Color Computer running OS-9 hooked to that
Mac via the serial interface, and the CoCo was better for playing
with software bits or controlling things, since it was much more
open hardware.
When I jumped up to a 200MHz Pentium in mid-2001, the best computer
of my life to that point (in terms of capacity and performance, not
in terms of personality), I suddenly realized it was so far ahead
of anything I had lying around that there wasn't much use for anything
else. I picked up a PowerMac 6100A/V for ten dollars a year later, and
wow that's a pretty neat computer, until compared to the Pentium. I got
this 1GHz computer last year, and that's even more of a leap forward.
For me, I can't figure out any real use for the 200MHz computer that
would warrant running it at the same time as the 1GHz machine. I
have way more computing capacity than I need.
