Maybe not, but the use of "we" in your introductory paragraph probably
had a lot of people thinking "here we go again..."

I think your (clarified) idea has merit, if you're capable of doing a
lot of the work yourself, and chances are once you get beyond the idea
stage you'll find a lot of the nay-sayers will turn out to be very
helpful.

As far as software development goes... "if you build it they will come".

I think there's probably a (small) potential market for something like
this in kit form... especially if it made use of common existing
peripherals.

I would suggest your best bet is to just get started on the project and
_then_ see who is willing to lend a hand... I bet you'll find as the
project progresses there will be quite a few folks around here willing
to offer some ideas.
