My HP scanner has software that will let you scan and convert to PDF
with selectable text if the source material is of sufficient quality.
An example of that would be the Apple prototype card manual that I
scanned and Wayne Stewart put up on his site.

how much did that put you back....?
Not much around $100 CDN ... it's a hp2300c ...
and what i really want is one that you
could
feed say 50 to 100 pages into it ...walk away and it is scanned i don't want
to scan 1 at
a time 2000 to 3000 pages of inventory items....i could do it but quite
frankly this project
of just cataloging everything will prob make me bonkers before then...

The scanning and converting to PDF is done by the bundled software.
You can specify scan as graphics, text or mixed. I like mixed the best
as it provides selectable text. It automaticaly OCR's the input. It is
pretty good with decent input.
I agree a sheet feeder would be a nice addtition but in reality
most of the stuff I want to scan is in book or magazine form and that
won't go through a sheet feeder.
