or more.... on a iie.
Only with explicit loading and unloading of code modules. Break it
down into 32K pieces with minimal interfaces. Not easy.
Classic Appleworks is a prime example of a large, modular
application using a formalized memory manager interface.
This interface was implemented for all popular memory
expansion devices (including the linear RAM of the
IIgs ;-).
The code is implemented as modules which can be transferred
from "extended" memory, and the data structures are "paged"
from extended memory. There is a relatively fixed performance
cost, but the relaxation of memory constraints is liberating.
It's a shame that the libraries and macros to make this easier
were not made available, since other programs could leverage
that support.
Much easier on a IIgs.
Linear is always easier. ;-)
