There is probably a way to set this up simply using System Preferences, I don't have a serial device to test with.
But assuming there isn't, the trick is to enable an appropriate line
(as in chaging the off to on)
in /etc/ttys then rebooting.
You'll need to know what the device name given to your usb to serial adapter is,
(which you can probably get from dmesg)
then the appropriate line to enable should be obvious.
