Pine is for e-mail, and obviously, that won't allow you into chat.
Have you talked to the techs at your ISP? At my ISP, Iglou.com , on the
shell menu there is an option for chat. Just pick the option and a few
more returns/enters, and you're on the server (which you can change to
another).
I won't return home until Tuesday, but when I do, I can check in
my reference book for connecting to the Internet (with your 8-bit
computer).
