Serial based Surfing

Hi,

I posted an item a number of months back now with regards to surfing the net (and basically acessing my unix boxes) thru my serial connection.

I successfully used Kermit to do just that, however, some of you may remember that I had reliability issues.

As it's the holiday period, I have time on my hands again to re-embark on this project and I'm wondering about the problems I had.

The problem was simply this: vt100 escape codes would appear (often on scrolling, but at other intervals of usually larger data throughputs as well). Data corruption looked like it was to blame.

I found 19200 baud to be a fairly acceptable rate of transmission from My apple //e (w/ Super Serial Card). I dropped this to 9600 to see if reliability went up, and if anything, it went down! Dropping to 300bps was way too slow but seemed somewhat better, although still not completely without problem.

So, does anyone know how I can have a reliable vt100 connection to my Linux box? - It *was* done back in the day, I used to hook dumb terminals up to mainframes and stuff all the time and at more than 300 bps for sure, so how can I get an acceptably reliable serial link? I wanna be able to show people how I can use an Apple II to surf the net using links, read email with mutt, chat with irssi and do most things people do today on a 22 year old Apple.

Cheers,

Alistair Ross
