ADT on an Apple IIc

Hi,
I have been trying, without success, to get ADT to function on an IIc.  I am
a blind person, and therefore I use a Cricket external speech synthesizer
which must be connected to the second serial port.  I have reconfigured ADT
to use slot 1.  I thought the IIc ports were hardware compatible with the
SSC.  Is this the case?  Are there any other reasons why ADT might not work
on an IIc?
Note that the software that drives my speech synthesizer, Textalker, is not
the problem.  I've successfully used ADT on both an E and a GS with an SSC
in slot 2.
