A standard 1000 came stock with 256k and could be upgraded with a 256k
'tin box' upgrade.  Any more than that and you had to use a standup
sidecar that plugged into the right hand side of the 1000.  The 500 came
stock with 512k and could be upgraded with a 512k 'tin box' upgrade to get
1mb.  To go beyond that, you had to get a slimline sidecar that fits the
500 on the expansion port on the left side.  Hard drives for the 500
incorporated ram expansion there as well in some cases as they both use
the left hand side port.

Even with the memory expansion, most Amiga games were designed to use 1mb
so the 1000 was still obsolete.
