I often consider the Amiga to be a Mac rival. I sometimes say that it could,
with proper development, have been an SGI rival.

But no. It should have been strangled at birth, especially in 600 and 1200
form. It's not even worthy of comparison to the IIgs.

I like the Apple II alot, and the IIgs is a nice machine, but there is
really no comparison. The Amiga was not just a rival for the mac, in
it's day it was superior to the mac. The Amiga could run rings around
almost any platform in the late 80's... The only area where I would
give the mac an edge is it's GUI back then, but the amiga OS was a
true multitasker, so there is even room for debate there. If you
really liked the MAc, there were plenty of solutions to emulate one,
and because the Amiga used the same cpu as the mac it could actually
emualte one at a comparable speed. I see the IIgs more as the
ultimate 8-bit computer rather then a real compettition for the Mac,
Amiga or Atari ST. In that light it is an incredible machie. The
IIgs took the Apple II platform to another level.

I think the problem with the comparison is between the last Amiga and the IIgs. Try comparing an Amiga 500 to the IIgs, and now the two machines are competitors, though CPU horsepower still goes to the Amiga.
